SS-31 Research Profile
SS-31, also known as elamipretide, MTP-131 or Bendavia, is a synthetic
mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide. This profile covers the 50 mg
research-vial version and distinguishes it from Forzinity, the
specific FDA-approved finished formulation for a defined Barth
syndrome population.

Product Information
About SS-31
SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide studied for its selective
interaction with cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
Research has examined whether this interaction can help stabilize
electron-transport-chain function, support ATP production and
reduce mitochondrial reactive oxygen species.
SS-31 has been investigated in preclinical models and human
clinical trials involving mitochondrial dysfunction and other
conditions. Results have varied by study and population.
The research-grade 50 mg vial is not the same as Forzinity.
The FDA-approved Forzinity formulation has its own specific
composition, presentation and approved indication.

Research Areas
What Research Has Examined
Mitochondrial Function
Preclinical research has examined mitochondrial bioenergetics,
ATP production and oxidative stress in aged or dysfunctional
mitochondria. Findings from these models do not establish
benefits for every condition or product form.
Clinical Research
Human studies, including the MMPOWER series, PROGRESS-HF and
TAZPOWER, have examined SS-31 in different populations. Results
on primary efficacy endpoints have been mixed, with some signals
reported in certain subgroups or open-label extensions.
Preclinical Models
Animal and laboratory research has investigated SS-31 in models
of ischemia-reperfusion injury, kidney injury and age-related
mitochondrial decline. These findings are preclinical and do not
establish human clinical outcomes.
Evidence Overview
Approval Is Formulation-Specific
Elamipretide, marketed as Forzinity, received FDA accelerated
approval to improve muscle strength in adult and pediatric patients
with Barth syndrome who weigh at least 30 kg. The approval is for
that specific finished product and defined indication.
The 50 mg research-grade SS-31 vial is not Forzinity and is not
approved for any use. Evidence or approval for the finished
pharmaceutical product should not be applied to a research-grade
vial.
Safety & Regulatory Status
Important Product Limitations
In clinical trials, SS-31 was generally reported as well tolerated;
injection-site reactions were among the common effects. Longer-term
data outside the specific approved use remain limited.
Forzinity is FDA-approved under accelerated approval for the defined
Barth syndrome indication. Continued approval may depend on
confirmatory evidence of clinical benefit. Research-grade SS-31
products are separate from this approved medicine and may vary in
quality and composition.
Evidence for other studied conditions, including primary mitochondrial
myopathy and heart failure, remains investigational. Trial findings
in those areas should not be presented as established benefits of
the research vial.
