Sermorelin Research Profile
Sermorelin is a synthetic 29-amino-acid analog of the N-terminal
fragment of human growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH 1–29). It
binds to pituitary GHRH receptors and has been studied for its effects
on endogenous growth-hormone release. Current research-grade and
compounded forms are not the former FDA-approved Geref product.

Product Information
About Sermorelin
Sermorelin is a synthetic version of the first 29 amino acids of
growth hormone-releasing hormone. It binds to GHRH receptors on
pituitary somatotroph cells and stimulates the release of the
body’s own growth hormone.
Because it stimulates endogenous growth hormone release, it acts
through the pituitary and the body’s feedback systems. Growth
hormone release may in turn affect circulating IGF-1. This
mechanism does not establish benefits for sleep, body composition,
recovery or connective tissue.
Sermorelin was previously marketed as Geref for specific diagnostic
and pediatric growth-hormone-related uses. The branded product was
discontinued, and those historical approvals do not apply to
current research-grade or compounded products.

Research Areas
What Research Has Examined
Growth-Hormone Signaling
Sermorelin has been studied for stimulating pituitary growth-hormone
release and downstream changes in IGF-1. The historical clinical
evidence primarily relates to diagnostic use and growth-hormone
deficiency in children.
Adult Body Composition
Adult use for fat loss, lean-mass support or “anti-aging” is not
established by strong clinical evidence. Findings from related
GHRH analogs or observational use should not be treated as proof of
benefit from Sermorelin.
Sleep and Recovery
Sleep quality and recovery are discussed in research and
practitioner settings, but reliable evidence establishing these
outcomes for current adult use is limited.
Combination Research
Sermorelin is sometimes discussed alongside growth-hormone
secretagogues such as Ipamorelin. The safety and effectiveness of
combining research compounds are not established by the former
Geref approvals.
Evidence Context
Historical Approval Was Specific
Geref had separate historical FDA approvals: one for a diagnostic
test of pituitary growth-hormone secretion and another for treating
selected children with growth failure associated with growth-hormone
deficiency. These were specific approved products and uses.
FDA records state that Geref was discontinued and its approval
withdrawn for reasons other than safety or effectiveness. That
determination does not mean current research or compounded
Sermorelin products are FDA-approved.
Safety & Regulatory Status
Limitations and Product Status
Reported effects include injection-site reactions, temporary facial
flushing, headache or lightheadedness; less common effects described
include changes in taste or mild nausea. The safety information for
historical Geref use does not establish the safety of current
research-grade or compounded products.
The source information flags active malignancy, pregnancy,
breastfeeding and certain pituitary disorders as situations requiring
clinician review. Obesity may blunt the growth-hormone response.
Appropriate assessment and monitoring are matters for a qualified
healthcare professional.
Sermorelin is not currently available as the former FDA-approved
Geref product. Current research-grade or compounded forms are not
FDA-approved for adult body-composition, sleep, recovery or
anti-aging uses. The 2026 WADA Prohibited List includes Sermorelin
among growth-hormone-releasing factors prohibited at all times.
